Surgery Was a Success!9

The hospital called this morning to check in and the tech said that Abbey is doing wonderful!!!  When she got there this morning she said that Abbey was standing up in her pen all by herself looking around for some attention…that’s my girl 🙂  I cannot wait to pick her up this afternoon…I am so excited to have her back home.  I miss my babies terribly when they are away from me 🙁

I must admit, I am slighty nervous about how I may react when I first see her…she won’t look exactly like the Abbey I remember.  I wonder, will I get used to her missing a limb right away or will it take me some time?  When I think about it, it does not bother me, but when I see her…will it be a different story?

All I know is that she made it through the surgery with flying colors and is already up and moving around!  Life is looking up for my little girl.  I can’t wait to see her in a few  hours 🙂

That’s fantastic news! Abbey is a fighter!

Brace yourself for the next couple weeks. It’s usually a roller coaster. Just love your girl, and treat her as if everything is normal.

Attagirl, Abbey! What a sweet picture that brings to mind, waiting for attention 🙂

It’s okay to be a bit nervous. I was too before I saw Catie. I’d bet good money though that the joy of seeing her and her joy of seeing you will wash all those fears away and you’ll be simply drop-jawed amazed.

Treasure every astounding, tear-filled, joyful moment of that reunion!

I’m so glad Abbey is doing well from the surgery! As for being shocked when you first see her, I can give you my personal experience with our dog Max. We weren’t allowed to visit him the day of surgery because the surgeon wanted Max to stay calm and relaxed. I visited him the next day. He was already standing in his pen. He had the “cone of shame” on, which sort initially blocked my view of his now amputated front left leg. They brought Max out of the pen to me, and honestly, he looked no different to me. The thing I noticed most was how much fur had been shaved from his body/neck for the surgery. Otherwise, he was my same boy. To me, it was more seeing my boy happy to see me, than the loss of a gimpy old leg. I could’ve cared less! And here’s a funny story: Max was so excited to see me, the dr’s thought it was dangerous to let him be out of the pen. So, Max went back in his pen, and I went with him! I was allowed to visit him for about 30 minutes. I’m sure it must’ve have been a great sight for the nurses that day, but again, I could’ve cared less about the circumstances. I was with my boy, and that’s all that mattered. Give Miss Abbey a kiss for me. She’s a very cute girl, and again, I’m glad she’s doing so well.

Sounds like Abbey is off to a Great start! Thanks for the update.

If you do find yourself feeling “different” when you see Abbey, don’t let her know. As Dr. Waldman suggests, if you want life to be normal again, you must act as though everything is normal. If you don’t Abbey will follow your lead. What she needs most now is a strong balanced pack leader to show her everuthing is and will be OK.

I was nervous about seeing Cooper too, I think it is just kind of normal to worry. I agree with Caties mom 100% I bet when you see Abbey the joy od seeing her will so outweigh any uneasiness you have!

    Yay for Abbey! That’s pawsome.

Remember, when you see her, just focus on her eyes. They will tell you, “It’s alright, we CAN do this!”

I’m so glad everything went well. Don’t worry so much about that first time seeing her without the leg. When I went to get my dog, Lyndon, after his amputation I was in tears I was so worried how he would look and how I would feel seeing him like that, knowing it was my decision that did it. But when I got there and he was running around the room and rubbing his head against my legs, I didn’t even notice the leg. Honestly I think that it was one of the most suprisingly happy moments of my life with him. When you see how little that leg matters to Abbey, it won’t matter much to you either. Be prepared to see her amazing adaptability 🙂
